Free Hunter-Safety Field Classes Are Coming to Molino, Jay and Milton

September sessions give new hunters a local route toward completing Florida’s safety-training requirement.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will offer hunter-safety field classes in Molino, Jay and Milton during September, followed by a scheduled range session in Milton on October 3.
The FWC field instruction, firearms, ammunition and safety equipment are provided without charge. Students must first complete an approved online hunter-safety course, which may be free or paid depending on the provider selected.
Advance registration is required through FWC’s online system.
Local Class Schedule
The published Northwest Florida schedule includes:
Monday, September 14, 6–10 p.m.: Molino Community Center, 6450 Highway 95-A North, Molino
Monday, September 21, 6–10 p.m.: Jay United Methodist Church, 14093 S. Alabama St., Jay
Monday, September 28, 6–10 p.m.: Santa Rosa County Extension Office, 6263 Dogwood Drive, Milton
Saturday, October 3, 9 a.m.–noon: Range Day at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution, 5850 E. Milton Road, Milton
FWC notes that some field courses take place over two days and require attendance for both sessions. Registrants should read the specific course record carefully to confirm which evening class is paired with the October 3 range session.
Remaining capacity was not publicly displayed Monday morning and should be considered unconfirmed until registration is completed.
What Must Students Complete First?
Before attending an FWC field day, each student must finish one of the state-approved online courses and bring a completion certificate or field-day voucher.
FWC lists several online providers. One option is free, while others currently advertise prices ranging from approximately $19.95 to $49.50. Those third-party prices can change and are separate from the no-cost FWC field instruction.
The online course generally takes about eight hours to complete, so prospective students should not wait until the evening before their selected class.
What Should Participants Bring?
Students should bring:
Online-course certificate or field-day voucher
Pen or pencil
Closed-toe shoes
Required parental and facility forms when applicable
Personal firearms and ammunition are not needed. FWC supplies the equipment used during supervised exercises.
The program is designed for students age 12 and older. A parent or legal guardian must accompany children younger than 16 at classes not held at a correctional facility. For a session held at a Department of Corrections property, participants younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and present the required release forms.
Anyone needing an accommodation should contact the appropriate FWC regional coordinator at least two weeks before the first class.
Who Needs Hunter-Safety Certification?
Florida generally requires anyone born on or after June 1, 1975, to complete an approved hunter-safety course before hunting unsupervised with a license, subject to limited exceptions.
The training covers safe firearms handling, loading and unloading, ethical shot decisions, conservation and responsible conduct in the field. FWC says its certification is recognized by every other U.S. state and Canadian province.
Complete the online prerequisite first, then use FWC’s registration portal to reserve a local field class and verify every required attendance date.
