Tonight Marks UWF Football’s Division I Debut
UWF announced its move to NCAA Division I athletics beginning with the 2026 season.
Football is making the jump to the Football Championship Subdivision and will compete in the United Athletic Conference, while UWF’s other athletic programs are joining the Atlantic Sun Conference.
That makes tonight much more than another season opener.
It is the first Division I football game in program history and the beginning of an entirely new level of competition for a program that did not even play its first football game until 2016.
From UWF’s First Football Game to Its First Division I Game
There is a fitting connection between UWF football’s first game and tonight’s Division I debut.
When the Argonauts played their first football game on September 3, 2016, current head coach Kaleb Nobles was UWF’s starting quarterback.
Nobles took the first snap in program history as UWF defeated Ave Maria 45 to 0.
Ten years later, he will lead the Argonauts onto the field as head coach for another first: UWF football’s debut at the NCAA Division I level.
The program moved quickly after its 2016 launch.
UWF reached the NCAA Division II National Championship game in just its second season in 2017 and won the Division II national championship in 2019.
Now the next chapter starts at home in Pensacola.
Southern Illinois Gives UWF an Immediate Test
UWF is not easing into Division I football.
Southern Illinois is an established FCS program that finished the 2025 season 7 and 5, including a win over then No. 11 Illinois State in its regular season finale.
The Salukis enter the new season ranked No. 16 in both the Stats Perform and American Football Coaches Association preseason FCS polls.
Tonight will also be the first meeting between UWF and Southern Illinois.
The matchup begins a home and home series, with UWF scheduled to travel to Carbondale, Illinois, in 2027.
Come Early for the UWF Tailgate
Fans do not have to wait until 6 PM to start the celebration.
UWF’s official tailgate begins at 2 PM ahead of tonight’s game.
Argo Village serves as the university’s official football tailgate area and includes the UWF Alumni Association, university organizations, sponsors and other gameday activities.
With tonight marking the program’s first Division I football game, UWF is encouraging the Pensacola community to come out early and be part of the occasion.
Wear White Tonight
Tonight’s game is officially designated as a White Out.
Fans attending the Southern Illinois matchup are encouraged to wear white as UWF opens its first FCS season.
The White Out is the first of several themed home games scheduled for 2026, including Family Weekend, Cancer Awareness, Homecoming and Salute to Service.
PenAir Field Is Changing Too
UWF’s move to Division I comes while the university is also making major investments in its football facilities.
Construction is underway around PenAir Field on the future Darrell Gooden Stadium, which is expected to open in fall 2027.
The completed stadium is planned for approximately 10,000 spectators with 7,500 permanent seats, premium seating, club areas and suites.
Because construction remains underway, seating for UWF’s 2026 season is concentrated on the east side of PenAir Field.
Fans will also see a new 85 foot by 30 foot HD video board near the north end zone as part of improvements for UWF’s inaugural FCS season.
What Comes Next for UWF Football?
Tonight begins a much different schedule from the one Pensacola football fans have become accustomed to.
After hosting Southern Illinois, UWF travels to Central Arkansas on September 5 for its first United Athletic Conference game.
The Argonauts return to Pensacola September 19 to host Austin Peay for Family Weekend. Other home opponents this season include Northeastern State, West Alabama and Tarleton State.
UWF will also travel to programs including Southeast Missouri State, Abilene Christian, Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama and former Gulf South Conference rival West Georgia.
A Historic Night for Pensacola College Football
UWF football has already packed a remarkable amount of history into its first decade.
The program went from its first snap in 2016 to a national championship in 2019 and now to Division I football in 2026.
Tonight, Pensacola gets its first look at what the next era will look like.
UWF and Southern Illinois kick off at 6 PM Thursday at PenAir Field. The official tailgate begins at 2 PM, fans are encouraged to wear white, and tickets remain available through UWF Athletics.
