A nearly 150-year-old tall ship that once visited Pensacola during the height of the Gulf Coast shipping era is preparing to return to the city this May.

The 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA will arrive at Palafox Pier on May 23, 2026, marking the first stop of its national Sail250 voyage ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebration in New York Harbor.

For Pensacola, the visit is more than just a ship docking downtown. It’s a rare opportunity to step aboard one of the oldest actively sailing vessels in the world and experience a living piece of maritime history up close.

Why ELISSA matters

Built in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1877, ELISSA is a square-rigged iron barque and one of only three ships of her type in the world still actively sailing today.

During her early years, the ship transported cargo around the world before eventually being abandoned in a scrapyard in Greece.

In 1978, the ship was rescued by the Galveston Historical Foundation and brought to Texas for restoration. By 1982, ELISSA had been fully restored and transformed into a floating museum capable of sailing once again.

Today:

  • She serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas

  • Is recognized as a National Historic Landmark

  • Welcomes more than 40,000 visitors annually

ELISSA’s connection to Pensacola

ELISSA first visited Pensacola in 1886 during her working cargo ship days and later returned in 2018.

Now, almost 150 years after being built, she returns again as part of a national maritime celebration leading up to the country’s semiquincentennial.

For a port city like Pensacola, the visit also highlights the area’s deep maritime history and the role Gulf Coast ports once played in global trade and commerce.

Part of the Sail250 voyage

Pensacola is the opening stop on ELISSA’s larger Sail250 route, which includes:

  • Savannah

  • Yorktown

  • Portsmouth

  • New York City

  • Boston

The voyage will culminate in a massive tall ship gathering in New York Harbor this July that is expected to become the largest flotilla of tall ships ever assembled in the United States.

ELISSA is scheduled to lead the parade of Class A tall ships into New York Harbor on July 4.

Why this is worth seeing

Even for people who are not deeply into maritime history, events like this are rare.

You’re not looking at a replica or static display. ELISSA is:

  • A real working tall ship from the 1800s

  • Still actively sailing today

  • Open for visitors to walk aboard in downtown Pensacola

For families, history lovers, photographers, and anyone interested in Gulf Coast heritage, this is one of the more unique waterfront events coming to Pensacola this year.

Planning your visit

  • Arrive early for downtown parking

  • Expect increased traffic near Palafox Pier

  • Deck tours are free and open to the public

  • Bring comfortable shoes since tours are self-guided onboard
