he Pensacola Umbrella Sky Project is coming back to Intendencia Street, bringing hundreds of colorful suspended umbrellas back above downtown Pensacola ahead of the summer season.

The installation originally became a viral attraction when it debuted in Pensacola during Foo Foo Festival in 2017, drawing massive crowds, social media attention, and thousands of photos beneath the floating umbrellas.

Now, the project is returning with a larger setup stretching farther across downtown.

Where the Umbrella Sky Project Will Be Located

The installation will once again be located along Intendencia Street in downtown Pensacola.

The project is expected to stretch between:

  • Palafox Street

  • Jefferson Street

The colorful umbrellas will hang high above the street, creating shade and transforming the downtown corridor into one of the most photographed spots in Pensacola.

According to downtown organizers, the new installation is expected to be longer and provide more coverage than previous versions.

What Is the Umbrella Sky Project

The Umbrella Sky Project originally began in Águeda, Portugal in 2012 before spreading internationally to cities around the world.

The concept features hundreds of colorful umbrellas suspended above narrow city streets, creating an open-air art installation that changes appearance throughout the day depending on lighting and weather conditions.

Pensacola became the first U.S. city to host the installation back in 2017 during Foo Foo Festival.

The original Pensacola installation quickly became one of the most successful public art activations in downtown history, drawing tens of thousands of visitors and becoming one of the city’s most photographed attractions.

Why It Became So Popular

Part of the appeal of the Umbrella Sky Project is how simple it is.

The installation turns an ordinary downtown street into a bright, colorful pedestrian space that naturally attracts:

  • Photography

  • Social media posts

  • Downtown foot traffic

  • Events and gatherings

During the original installation, downtown businesses reported major increases in visitors, and the project became a major visual symbol for Pensacola’s growing arts and culture scene.

The setup also provides shade during warmer months, making Intendencia Street more walkable during the daytime.

Downtown Pensacola’s Growing Public Art Scene

The Umbrella Sky Project helped inspire additional large-scale downtown art installations over the last several years.

Projects like:

  • Bubble Alley

  • Fire & Rain

  • Other Foo Foo Festival aerial art displays

have continued building downtown Pensacola’s reputation for interactive public art installations.

The return of Umbrella Sky is expected to once again increase foot traffic throughout the downtown restaurant and entertainment district.

Planning a Downtown Pensacola Visit

The Umbrella Sky Project sits directly in the middle of one of the busiest sections of downtown Pensacola.

Visitors can easily combine it with:

  • Palafox Street restaurants

  • Downtown bars and coffee shops

  • Gallery visits

  • Historic Pensacola attractions

  • Nearby events and festivals

The installation also tends to look especially colorful during sunrise, sunset, and evening lighting conditions.
